Gas Tube Vise Jaws Instructions
The Sully Gas Tube Vise Jaws are designed for removal &
installation of gas tubes on AR15 & AR308 type weapons systems. Often times gas tubes can get stuck inside of
gas blocks & front sight bases from use, where the carbon builds up causing
the gas tube to get bound up.
To
remove a stuck gas tube, you will need these recommended tools & follow
these directions:
Tools: Sully Gas
Tube Vise Jaws, 5/64” Pin Punch, Kroil Creeping Oil, Armorer Bench Block, and a
good Bench Vise. A 4” Bench Vise is a
good size, as it allows you just enough space to clamp onto carbine length gas
tubes (6”-8” vises may be too wide on carbine length gas tubes)
- Remove the gas tube roll
pin. Most gas tube roll pins are 5/64”
in diameter, so we recommend using a 5/64” punch, small ballpein hammer, and a
few drops of Kroil creeping oil, and a bench vise. Note: If no bench vise is available due to
field conditions, a good set of vise grips or possibly a C-clamp could be a
good substitute in a pinch. First add a
few drops of Kroil to both sides of the roll pin where it is inserted in the
gas block or front sight base. Next
brace the gas block or front sight base on an armorer bench block. Place the tip of the 5/64” punch onto the
roll pin, and tap the punch carefully with the ballpein hammer to remove the
roll pin. Once the roll pin is removed,
you are ready to remove the gas tube from the gas block or front sight base.
- Place the Sully Gas Tube Vise
Jaws around the gas tube, approximately 1” behind the front sight base or gas
block.
- Now put the Sully Gas Tube
Vise Jaws with the inserted gas tube, into a bench vise. Lower the Sully Gas Tube Vise Jaws as low as
you can, getting them as close to level with the top of the bench vise jaws as
possible. Now tighten the bench vise
until everything is clamped up firmly, so the bench vise jaws now obtain a
solid firm hold on the gas tube so it doesn’t slip around.
- With the gas tube firmly
clamped into a bench vise, try to carefully rotate the assembly each direction,
trying to get the gas tube to rotate inside of the gas block or front sight
base. If you can get it to rotate, then keep rotating while you push the assembly forward and the gas tube comes out of the front sight base or gas block.
- If the gas tube is carboned up
the point that nothing can be rotated, try applying some heat with a propane or
butane torch, which the heat will help expand the tolerances and soften the
carbon build up, and at the same time keep applying a little rotation pressure
until you can get the gas tube to rotate to one side or the other. Once you can get the gas tube to rotate
inside of the front sight base or gas block, add some Kroil inside the roll pin
hole, then rotate the gas tube to the other side and apply more Kroil to the
other side roll pin hole. Next carefully
rotate the gas tube back/forth to work the Kroil into the carbon fouling, until
things get loosened up. then keep rotating while you push the assembly forward
and the gas tube comes out of the front sight base or gas block.
- If you can freely rotate the
gas tube inside of the gas block or front sight base, but it still will not
allow you to pull the gas tube out, then you can place an armorer bench block
at the back of the upper receiver, and carefully use a ballpein hammer to tap
on the armorer bench block to help shift the gas tube out of the gas block or
front sight base.
Gas
Tube Installation: The
Sully Gas Tube Vise Jaws also allow easier installation of getting gas tubes
inserted and the roll pin hole properly so you can install the roll pin.
Tools Needed: Sully
Gas Tube Jaws, Armorer Bench Block, Bench Vise, 3/32” Roll Pin Punch, Gun Lube,
and we also recommend a 1/16” Pin Punch to be used to ensure that the gas roll
pin hole is properly aligned with the roll pin hole in the gas block or front
sight base.
- Insert the roll pin hole end
of the gas tube into the front sight base or gas block as far as you can.
- Place the Sully Gas Tube Vise
Jaws around the gas tube, about 2”-3” back from the front end of the gas tube
(The front end is the gas ported / roll pin hole end of the gas tube).
- Place the Sully Gas Tube Vise
Jaws with the gas tube inserted, into the jaws of a bench vise. (Note: In the
field where a bench vise is not available, you could possibly use a set of vise
grips instead).
- With the assembly firmly
clamped into a bench vise, gently rotate and push the gas tube into the front
sight base or gas block, and visually watch through the roll pin hole until the
roll pin holes of the gas tube and front sight base or gas block properly align
with each other.
- Once the gas tube holes are in
proper alignment with each other, insert the 1/16” pin punch into the holes to
confirm that you have obtained proper alignment so the roll pin can be
installed.
- To install the roll pin, add
some gun oil to the roll pin hole. Brace
the front sight base or gas block onto the Armorer Bench Block. Then using the 3/32” roll pin punch,
carefully and gently tap the roll pin into the assembly until the roll pin is
at the desired depth you want.
